Man charged with stealing lighting units waives speedy trial

Chief Judge Alex R. Munson granted the motion of Masaoishy Daikichi Sallem, saying that “the ends of justice will be served by allowing the defense further time to review the evidence in preparation for trial.”

The court also found that the federal government’s plea offer outweighs any other interests the public or the defendant may have in a speedy trial.

Munson ordered the jury trial to commence on Oct. 20 instead of the original schedule set for Oct. 14.

All motions should be filed not later than a week before the trial.

Sallem filed a waiver of speedy trial to allow his counsel to effectively prepare for his case.

Sallem is out on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

Sallem and his co-defendants Dominic Chipwelong and James Ochcha Sallem were indicted for conspiracy to sell government property and theft of government property.

Ocha was indicted separately for the destruction of veteran memorials.

The indictment stated that from Nov. 1 to 7, 2007, the three defendants conspired to steal and, without authority, sell metal lighting units of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service.

The metal lighting units were worth more than $1,000.

The indictment stated that on Nov. 4, 2007, Sallem sold a portion of the metal lighting units stolen from American Memorial Park to the employees of Huang Zheng recycling center.
