Former Sen. HR Guerrero passes away

ONE of the prominent politicians in the early years of the CNMI, former Sen. Herman Rogolifoi Guerrero passed away in the morning of March 11, 2023. He was 83.

Guerrero, who would have turned 84 on May 6, 2023, was in Guam when he passed away.

His son, former Rep. Fred Deleon Guerrero, said his father left for Guam on March 10, and had been complaining that “he was not feeling good.”

He was scheduled to see a doctor for his eye checkup on March 11 when he suffered a heart attack at around 5:30 a.m. on the same day.

The former senator, known to many as HR, served on the Saipan Municipal Council and in the Congress of Micronesia. In 1977, he was elected to the first CNMI Senate and served as its minority leader.

In 1981, he was the Democratic Party’s candidate for governor.

He was instrumental in the creation of the Micronesian Legal Services and lobbied in Washington D.C. for the retention of the Head Start program in Micronesia.

Former Rep. Fred Deleon Guerrero said on behalf of their family, he would like to thank all those who offered their prayers and extended their condolences.

The former senator’s family members will arrive from the U.S. in the morning of Tuesday.  His remains are expected to arrive at 1:30 p.m. on the same day.  Funeral services will be held at 10:45 a.m. at Borja Funeral Home on March 31, 2023, followed by a viewing at Mount Carmel Cathedral from 12 noon to 2 p.m., and a Mass at 3 p.m.
