Ex-BMV director’s request for court-appointed counsel granted

CHIEF Judge Ramona V. Manglona of the District Court for the NMI has granted the request of former Bureau of Motor Vehicles Director Juana Cabrera Leon Guerrero for a court-appointed counsel after learning from the defendant that she is no longer employed by the Department of Public Safety.

She said DPS notified her on March 23, 2023 that she had been placed on leave without pay effective March 27, 2023.

The judge on Wednesday also reappointed attorney Robert T. Torres to represent Leon Guerrero, and ordered the defendant to pay the amount of $1,500 to the clerk of court within 30 days of the issued order “to pay for some of the costs of her legal representation.”

On March 16, 2023, a  grand jury indicted Leon Guerrero on the charge of conspiracy to unlawfully produce an identification document, to wit, CNMI driver’s licenses.

Leon Guerrero pled not guilty to the charge. Her jury trial is scheduled for May 25, 2023 at 10 a.m.  Her co-defendant, Yongde Li, through attorney Janet King, also pled not guilty. His jury trial will start on May 23, 2023 at 10 a.m.

Both defendants have been released on their own recognizance.
