Kalabera Cave closed until further notice

KALABERA Cave is officially closed until further notice, according to a public notice from the Capital Improvement Program of the CNMI Office of the Governor.

The area is undergoing “repairs and improvements.”

Variety visited the site on Monday and was informed by a staff member on duty that tourists and visitors could go inside “at their own risk.”

Several tourists and tour operators were also seen visiting and entering the cave on Monday.

In an interview last week, Division of Parks and Recreation acting Director Ray Sablan said community members could enter the cave, but the gate would remain closed to prevent grazing cows from nearby farms from entering the cave.

Sablan on Tuesday said the Office of the Governor instructed them to close the cave due to an ongoing renovation project.

“We want to ensure the safety of our visitors, that is why we decided to keep the Kalabera Cave closed. The area is still under construction and will be open only until the repairs are completed,” Sablan said.

A famous tourist destination, Kalabera Cave is a prehistoric burial site.
