New law renames Rota Health Center chapel in honor of former Senate President Calvo

SENATE Local Bill 22-15, which renames Rota Health Center’s Divine Mercy Chapel in honor of former Senate President Julian S. Calvo, became Rota Local Law 22-13 on Dec. 27, 2022 without the signature of Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.

Authored by Sen. Teresita Santos, the local bill was passed by the Rota Legislative Delegation on Nov. 3, 2022 and transmitted to the governor’s office on Nov. 14, 2022.

The new law recognizes Calvo’s compassion and devotion to help improve the lives of the people of Rota. He was the Senate president in the Fifth Legislature.

After leaving his elected position, Calvo continued to serve the public by holding positions such as acting resident director of Rota Health Center and as health consultant for the Rota mayor.

During this time, he and his wife, the late Lydia D. Calvo, envisioned building a chapel at the Rota Health Center to help meet the spiritual needs of the patients.

According to the bill, Calvo was instrumental in ensuring that the chapel was built.

A successful entrepreneur who actively contributes to the community, Calvo is a “key figure in the most important policy issues over the past 50 years, conducting himself with professionalism and civility, and delivering results that have made a positive difference in the lives of our people,” the bill stated.
