JUST a day after being sworn into office, the Senate leadership on Tuesday announced its standing committee chairs — all members of the new Independent-Democratic leadership.
The Committee on Judiciary, Government, Law and Federal Relations has been split into two: the Committee on Judiciary, Government and Law, and the Committee on Federal Relations.
The former Committee on Resources, Economic Development, and Programs is now known as the Committee on Resources, Economic Development, Programs and Gaming.
Sen. Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, will chair the Committee on Federal Relations which will be responsible for matters pertaining to relations between the federal government, including the United Nations, and the Commonwealth government.
He will also chair the Committee on Rules and Procedures and the Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation, and Communications.
Senate Vice President Donald M. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, will chair the Committee on Fiscal Affairs which is responsible for reviewing matters related to the finances and financial administration of the Commonwealth and municipal governments. These include tax and non-tax revenues, budgets, expenditures, appropriations, loans, debts, claims, funding arrangements, accounting, audits, and gaming.
The freshman senator will also chair the Committee on Health, Education, and Welfare.
Senate Floor Leader Corina L. Magofna, Ind.-Saipan, will chair the Committee on Resources, Economic Development, Programs and Gaming.
Legislative Secretary Celina R. Babauta, D-Saipan, will chair the Committee on Judiciary, Government, and Law, and the Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations.
The new Senate president is Edith Deleon Guerrero, D-Saipan.
Sen. Celina R. Babauta delivers her speech as Senate Floor Leader Corina L. Magofna, right, and Sen. Karl King-Nabors listen during the 23rd Senate’s inaugural session on Monday.
