Security guard foils theft attempt at IPI casino hotel

A SECURITY guard caught two men stealing about 140 feet of copper wire, construction and other tools from Imperial Pacific International’s casino hotel in Garapan on Monday afternoon.

But the still unidentified suspects got away before the police arrived, leaving the stolen items behind.

One of the security guards manning IPI informed the responding police officers that two suspects detached the electric wires from a power distribution panel, and the copper tubes from water heaters.

The incident took place at approximately 1:15 p.m.

The rolls of copper wire in a black backpack were found abandoned on the ground at the back of IPI while the tools and several copper tubes were discovered on the temporary walkway between IPI and Serenti Hotel.

The police had yet to determine if there were any other items that were stolen. According to the security guards, there were many construction and electrical tools stored in the unfinished hotel tower.

Variety was told that one of the suspects wore a gas mask. The security guard who caught the thieves used his cell phone to take a photo of the other suspect before calling the police.

The IPI casino hotel in Garapan, which shut down in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has been disconnected by the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. from the power grid since May 20, 2021 for failure to pay its bills.
