A U.S. congressional delegation’s visit on Tuesday renewed the Tinian leaders’ hope that the proposed harbor improvement project for the island will move forward soon.
“I want to express my appreciation to the members of the U.S. House of Representatives for taking the time to visit our island,” Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan said in an interview.
U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, who chairs the House Appropriation Committee’s Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies, U.S. Congressman Ed Case, D-Hawaii, U.S. Congressman Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, and U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan of the CNMI toured the site of the divert airfield construction project and visited the Tinian airport and seaport.
Aldan said the congressional delegation’s visit was very significant “because they are the people who appropriate money for the military construction projects on our island.”
He said he and other Tinian leaders were glad that the U.S. lawmakers also took the time to visit the Tinian harbor and see for themselves the current condition of the docks and the breakwater.
The mayor said the visiting members of Congress also took the opportunity “to hear the sentiments and concerns of the people of Tinian.”
For his part, Sen. Francisco Q. Cruz, who chairs the Tinian Legislative Delegation, said on behalf of the delegation and their constituents, he would like to express his sincere gratitude to the members of the U.S. congressional delegation who saw for themselves the condition of the Tinian harbor.
Hopefully, he said, the proposed Tinian harbor improvement project will move forward soon.
Edwin Aldan
