Starting on Dec. 1, MVA to display lighted Christmas sculptures

THE Marianas Visitors Authority will light up Christmas and culture sculptures beginning Dec. 1, MVA product development manager Tiana Reyes said.

MVA’s annual illumination project was in hiatus for the past two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, she added.

As for the annual MVA Christmas in the Marianas event, which is slated for Dec. 3, 10, 17, 2022 and Jan. 7, 2023 at the Garapan Fishing Base, Reyes said it is separate from the illumination project.

But the illumination project will complement the Christmas in the Marianas event, she added.

“We are going to create a walk-through lighted sculpture experience [so] people in the community [will have] the opportunity to…experience it. And it’s something different. With the pandemic slowly fading, we are able to create a more in-person and immersive experience overall,” Reyes said.

The project will cost MVA about $200,000, she added.

MVA also collaborated with other agencies, such as the Department of Public Lands, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation, and the Department of Land and Natural and Resources, she said.

MVA will light up the sculptures on Dec. 1, but work will begin as early as Nov. 1, Reyes said.

She said the walk-through will be located near the clinic at Garapan Fishing Base. “It’s going to have a U-shape walkway,” she added.

Reyes said the walk-through will have lighted sculptures that symbolize the Marianas.

“We will be using cultural sculptures [depicting] mwaars, latte stones, and we are going to create something that ties in with the indigenous cultures of the islands for visitors and residents to experience,” Reyes added.
