Energy Task Force distributes free electric fans to Saipan residents

THE CNMI Energy Task Force — which consists of the Office of the Governor, the Department of Public Works-Division of Energy, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation, and the Office of Grants Management — distributed free 18-inch electric stand fans on Wednesday afternoon at the multi-purpose center in Susupe.

“We will continue the drive-thru…distribution [today], Thursday [Oct. 13],” OGM Administrator Epiphanio “Epi” Cabrera said.

“Please pay attention to the Office of the Governor’s social media page for some changes or reroutes for the distribution. We want to make adjustments to avoid traffic congestion,” he added.

“There were some delays as some of the residents are carpooling and have multiple CUC billing accounts in one vehicle,” he said.

He asks residents to be mindful of the space in their vehicles when availing themselves of the free electric stand fans.

According to a task force staffer, as of 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, 410 electric fans had already been distributed. About 1,000 electric fans will be given out on each day.

The governor’s office will also distribute bags of rice and solar lights in the following months, Cabrera said.

As for Rota and Tinian, the electric fan distribution will be held after the elections, he added.

For his part, acting CUC Executive Director Chretien T. Voerg, said, “As the continuation of Public Power Week celebration, CUC is proud to support the CNMI Energy Task Force’s distribution  of 1,000 electric fans today and another thousand tomorrow to customers in the CNMI.”

He added, “The initiative is to help reduce the electric costs for our customers. Instead of using an air-conditioning unit, use an electric fan, that way the household can reduce energy consumption. It’s good for the customers and it’s good for the environment.”

To avail themselves of a free stand fan, residential homeowners must present a copy of a valid government-issued identification card and a hard copy of their most recent CUC utility bill. There is a limit of one fan per CUC utility bill. As for sub-metered households, they are required to submit a copy of the master CUC meter account bill.
