Remengesau first to reach bottom of Palau Trench

KOROR (Island Times/Pacnews) — Former President Tommy Remengesau Jr. has returned from his eight-hour trip to reach the bottom of the 26,246 feet Palau trench.

Remengesau with Victor Vescovo, an undersea explorer and private equity investor, descended the Palau trench Monday morning and came back up at past 4 p.m. on the same day. They were the first two people to reach the bottom of the Palau Trench.

On July 16, Saturday, Micronesian master navigator Sesarior Sewralur became the first man to reach the bottom of the Yap trench, a slightly deeper trench at 29,032 feet.

Remengesau, Vescovo and Sewralur were launched from DSSV Pressure Drop, a research vessel that explores new ocean depths.
