Swimmer Juhn Tenorio breaks two NMI records at world championships

JUHN Tenorio broke two NMI records on Sunday, June 19, when he competed in the 19th FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

FINA stands for Fédération Internationale de Natation or the International Swimming Federation.

Tenorio entered the world championships with a mission and he delivered  in the 100-meter and 50-meter backstroke by setting two new NMI records.

In the 100-meter backstroke, the 18-year-old swimmer clocked 1:00.93. In heat 2 of the event he placed fourth. Shiu Lau of Hong Kong came in first with a time of 57.06 followed by Yazan Al Bawwab (59.31) of Canada, and Bede Aitu (59.54) of the Cook Islands.

In the 50-meter backstroke, Tenorio clocked a new NMI record of 28.18 in heat 2. He finished second to Ali Alessa of Saudi Arabia who placed first with a time of 27.26.

“It was my goal to get both records so I am happy with the results, but these are just stepping stones to my final goal which is swimming in college,”  Tenorio said in an interview with Variety. “I would like to thank my coach and my mother because we were in a tough situation but they were able to put me out there while not having the ideal facilities as an athlete.”

Tenorio graduated from Marianas High School in May. At the age of 5, he fell in love with swimming and now has 13 years of experience behind him.
