The ballot question asked whether the territorial legislature should be able to override a governor’s veto. Currently, only the U.S. secretary of the Interior can override vetoes.
If voters pass the referendum, it would go to the U.S. Congress for approval.
Also in Tuesday’s election, incumbent Gov. Togiola Tulafono was being challenged by three competitors. Tulafono has served as governor since 2003.
American Samoa’s delegate to Congress, Eni Faleomavaega, was seeking his 10th consecutive term against challengers Aumua Amata Radewagen and Rosie Fualaau Tago Lancaster.
