PSC chairman Rishi Ram said restructure of the 800 established and unestablished posts would save the state $7 million.
“All the ministries are subject to restructure and staff reduction and all the government permanent secretaries have been briefed on this,” he said.
Ram said permanent secretaries were briefed on the progress of the policy in their last meeting.
“This time we are serious about this policy and we will continue with the program,” he said.
Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama had decided to reduce the size of the civil service by 10 percent.
Ram said some of the government ministries had already undergone restructure and the rest would follow.
“We are hoping to finish disestablishing 1000 posts by this year with more posts to follow next year,” he said.
Ram said they were not planning on any redundancy packages at this point because they were trying to reassign civil servants from one ministry to another.
“We have not planned on laying off anyone at this point because we are trying our best to redeploy people,” he said.
Fiji Public Service Association General Secretary Rajeshwar Singh said the union had not heard any updates from PSC on the cut backs.
Singh said he was not aware of how many of FPSA members would be retiring this year or next year.
