This was revealed to the Post-Courier by Civil Aviation Authority boss Joseph Kintau in Port Moresby following the start of an Airlines PNG and Pacific Blue airlines Port Moresby-Brisbane service.
“Discussion is currently going on between Sky Air World and us (CAA),” Kintau said.
“They want to run a route from Brisbane, Cairns to Gurney and to other tourist destinations. They are asking for subsidy, landing fees and route fees. Those are issues we are discussing at the moment. We hope to open the international airport December 5 (at) Gurney and we’ll run a trial run there.”
Sky Air World is an Australian-based airliner which operates to Solomon Islands and Fiji and within Australia.
PNG-based Airlines PNG and Pacific Blue airlines started their inaugural service with Pacific Blue’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft landing at Port Moresby’s Jackson International Airport. The inaugural service was for the Port Moresby to Brisbane, Australia, route.
The introduction of competition also saw Air Niugini, which has monopolized the industry for more than 30 years, slash its fares to K485 one-way for the Brisbane to Port Moresby route against Airlines PNG- Pacific Blue’s K499.
