CUC ready to remove used oil

Antonio S. Muna, CUC’s executive director, said the plan to refurbish Tank 104 is being considered.

“We’ve already look at the bids submitted regarding ways to contain the used oil,” he added.

The plan includes the renovation of the tank that will contain about 400,000 gallons of used oil and other oil stored in drums, Muna said.

He justified the governor’s renewal of the state of emergency declaration.

“We want to make sure the tank is secured because it contains hundred of gallons of used oil,” he told Variety.

Early this month, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial renewed the emergency declaration to enable the 15-megawatt generators rented from Aggreko International Power Projects Ltd. to continue operating even though it has yet to secure environmental permits.

In his declaration, the governor said the emergency procurement will address the Tank 104 renovation and its 400,000 gallons of used diesel oil.

CUC needs flexibility to empty the tank as soon as possible, he added.

Muna said CUC will empty the Tank 104 facility which he described as “structurally unsound.”

Severe weather, particularly a typhoon, can damage the tank and, consequently, the island’s lagoon.

There are 2,800 sealed barrels of used oil within the CUC compound that must be removed, Muna said.

But any removal effort must comply with federal environmental standards, he added.
