Investor vows to help local fishermen

Through its big fishing vessels and equipment, the company expects to catch a big volume of fresh and quality pelagic fish products for its huge market that includes Japan, Guam and Hawaii.

Its general manager, Frank Crabtree, in an interview on Tuesday, said they will not compete with local fishermen who depend on reef fish.

Crabtree added that there is a great demand for the fish that local fishermen usually harvest.

He said they have been receiving orders from their clients in Asia and Hawaii who want reef fish.

According to Crabtree, their company can help the Saipan Fishermen’s Association market their harvest.

His company wants to work closely with the local fishermen’s group in marketing their local harvest.

The officers of the Saipan Fishermen’s Association discussed this offer last week but has yet to make a decision.

The association was awarded $150,000 seed money last year by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.

The group formed a cooperative and opened a fish market to help local fishermen sell their catch.

But business was slow and the store had to shut down.

The association is now looking for a new store venue but has yet to finalize its plan.
