Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo set a $6,000 cash bail for Joo Sun Kyou, 36, yesterday.
Chief Public Defender Adam Hardwicke will represent Joo who stands to face multiple counts of theft and forgery charges.
Assistant Attorney General Mike Evangelista is prosecuting the case.
In his written statement to the court, Detective Joaquin I. Deleon Guerrero said Sung Sook Cho discovered the anomaly after she was tipped off by some accountants at XO Market where some of the checks were cashed.
Cho’s husband, Yung Dae Kim, hired Joo last June to oversee his business, Cool Car Wash.
Joo told Kim to open a checking account for his company at Bank of Saipan.
In her recent visit to Saipan, Cho discovered Joo’s modus operandi and called the police.
Joo asked Cho forgiveness for what he did, according to the detective assigned to the case.
“She confronted Joo about the forged checks and Joo apologized to her saying she and Kim will be paid back by his death. Cho learned from the Bank of Saipan that her forged company checks amounted to over $20,000,” the detective’s affidavit stated.
