Smooth transition sought for Compact review

The Compact discussions is set on Dec. 16 to 18 and the primary staff to the representative led by Chief of Staff Billy Kuartei are Ambassador to the United States Hersey Kyota, Mike Channin, Attorney representing Palau in Washington Dc, Kevin O Keefe, Economic Adviser and for Palau Casmir Remengesau, National Planner and Larry Goddard, Senior Legal Counsel to Remengesau joins the panel.

“We believe that it would also be helful to set up a half day meeting with the outgoing as well as the new members-elect of the Olbiil Era Kelulau during the two day period,” Remengesau said in a letter to Toribiong.A briefing on the Compact of Free Association upcoming review among United States representatives , President Remengesau and President-elect Johnson Toribiong is set on Dec. 16 to 18.President Remengesau earlier told reporters that it will be a crucial meeting because the review will be crucial.He said it’s important to set the meeting to determine where both countries are going with the upcoming review.The president said that unlike the Compact between the U.S. and two other freely associated states, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), Palau do not have a continuing resolution which will continue assistance to these nations even without completing the negotiations.“For Palau everything comes to an end unless there is piece legislation in place,” Remengesau said.
