Garapan students honor King Jr., Obama inauguration

Students from kindergarten to sixth grade made their own banners that depicted freedom and equality.

The students marched on the streets surrounding the school, according to first grade teacher  Elaine Dela Cruz.

“It’s the best way to kick off 2009,” she added.

The theme of the event, which also celebrated Obama’s inauguration, was “Democracy, Equality for All.”

According to Dela Cruz, they integrated the Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration into their health and wellness activity.

The students’ banners had pictures of King and Obama who were portrayed as champions of democracy, freedom and equality.

“Let Freedom Ring,” proclaimed the banners which were created by the students based on their understanding of King’s ideals.

Dela Cruz said prior to the event, the students watched a documentary about ethnicity and cultural diversity.

“My class is so diverse with children of about six different ethnic groups,” Dela Cruz said. “They understand and respect each other.”

Her students, she said, know what freedom and equality are.

Students who made the best banners, along those who won  the essay-writing contest, will receive awards.
