Deputy Commissioner of Police Arthur Caulton confirmed to the Vanuatu Daily Post newspaper that a woman, believed to be the mother of the young girl, lodged an official complaint against the MP for the rape that happened on Christmas Eve.
Caulton said the MP booked a room at the Pango Ocean Blue Resort where he tried to rape her daughter.
Reports reaching Daily Post said he was believed to be under the influence of alcohol.
Police have not released the identity of the MP until all investigation is completed.
