Around the Islands

Held in Honolulu, Hawaii, the United States Associated Pacific Islands Nursing Program Directors Meeting was sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service/Health and Human Services and the University of Hawaii’s School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.

“I was very pleased to be invited to this important summit,” said Calvo, who is also the College’s Nursing Department acting chairwoman. “In addition to networking with other nursing professionals in the region, I was able to obtain useful information that would benefit our nursing program and practices.”

The topics covered in the meeting included nursing faculty development programs, online technology learning sessions, completion of mapping projects, a discussion on the proposed master’s and doctoral nursing degree program through distance education in the Pacific region, and a host of other sessions specifically dealing with the outbreak of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.

Summit participants also met key leaders from Hawaii and throughout the Pacific.

Calvo represented the CNMI and was joined by others from American Samoa, the Marshall Islands, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Hawaii. Her trip expenses were paid by federal funds.

Northern Marianas College is also continuing its ongoing efforts to gain additional accreditation from the National League for Nursing.
