Fiji’s 14 political parties have thrown their support behind Sir Michael, with support from Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, hoping he can convince the leaders for a positive and peaceful political negotiation and settlement for Fiji.
The parties want Australia and New Zealand to take the back stage and let PNG, with the support from Solomon Island and Vanuatu sort out the situation with interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama in the “Melanesian way” as this is the only way he will come out and speak for all to hear.
The Fijian parties are optimistic that the forum meeting in Port Moresby will be fruitful if Sir Michael is given the chances and the time with Bainimarama.
Two Fijian political parties, the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party, belonging to former Fiji PM Laisenia Qarase, and Conservative Alliance/Matanitu Vanua Party, have spoken on behalf of the parties in Fiji.
CAMV General Secretary Ropate Sivo said they condemned in the strongest manner any move by New Zealand, Australia and Samoa to have Fiji suspended from the forum.
“Fiji interim PM Bainimarama will listen to Sir Michael. We all listen to him as he is one of the founding members and a leader who is still alive and frequents Fiji for good friendship. In any case, CAMV calls upon the Melanesian brotherhood of nations to stand beside Fiji. At this critical time. I plead with Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and PNG to vote against the motion that is being engineered by NZ, Australia, Samoa and the Polynesian and Micronesian members of the forum,” Sivo said.
“CAMV will stand up for Fiji and her people, regardless of ethnic and gender. We are all Fijians! Anything that is against Fiji is what we will fight against strongly,” Sivo added.
CAMV wants to hear from community leaders of Melanesians, Micronesians and Polynesians living in Fiji on their call on this issue.
