Deleon Guerrero will be Babauta’s running mate

Babauta and Deleon Guerrero will announce their team-up tomorrow at the former governor’s residence in Gualo Rai.

Supporters of the former governor said the Mount Carmel School principal will inject “new and young blood” into the ticket.

Deleon Guerrero and Babauta declined to comment yesterday.

In an earlier interview, Deleon Guerrrero described the prospect of running for higher office as “a scary thing.”

A Babauta supporter, former Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director   Roman T. Tudela said the former governor will seek the Republican Party’s nomination.

Babauta, he added, is an experienced leader who will run with the “right young person.”

For his part, Rep. Joseph C. Reyes, R-Saipan, said in a separate interview that he is not happy to see partymates leaving the GOP to pursue their own plans.

He did not elaborate, but added that if there will be more than one Republican gubernatorial aspirant, the party should hold a primary.

Reyes served as chairman of the Retirement Fund during the Babauta administration.

Besides Babauta, Reps. Heinz S. Hofschneider and Diego T. Benavente are also running for governor.

Benavente was Babauta’s running mate in the 2001 and 2005 elections.
