Pacific Mini Games opening ceremony today

THE Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games 2022 will kick off today, Friday, June 17, at the Oleai Sports Complex starting at 5:30 p.m.

The opening ceremony will feature NMI Athletes of the Year Zarinae Sapong and Jason Tarkong as the flag bearers of the Commonwealth during the presentation of the flags.

Following the invocation by Chalan Kanoa Bishop Ryan P. Jimenez, the Oath of Athletes and the Technical Official Oath will be read by Kaya Rain Rasa and Antonio Rogolifoi.

Those who will deliver opening remarks are Organizing Committee Chairman Marco Peter, Pacific Games Council President Vidhya Lakhan and Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.

Next is the Pacific Mini Games Relay Torch which will involve NMI athletes and NMI Sports Hall of Famer Dr. Kurt Barnes who will lit the cauldron. Barnes was also one of the organizers of the 1969 Micronesian Olympics.

The cultural performers will include a Chamorro Ensemble, the Uraali group, the Talabwogh Women and the Talabwogh Men Refaluwasch Warriors.

The Federated States of Micronesia track and field team was given a dinner welcome by the NMI-based Pohnpei and Ach Chuuk Association at Guma Higai, Chamorro Village in Susupe on Thursday evening.  The event was hosted by FSM organization presidents:  1) Pohnpei Organization - Nolyn Villagomez; 2) Ach Chuuk CNMI Association - Own Cholymay; 3) (Yap) WAAB Club - Casey Gaamed.  The honorary consul to FSM, former Lt. Gov. Diego Benavente, gave welcoming remarks with wife Vicky Benavente. Senate Floor Leader Vinnie Sablan, Reps. Leepan Guerrero and Angel Demapan  also attended the gathering. Grace Sablan, House candidate for Precinct 3, and Elfrieda Suda coordinated the hosting event for the FSM athletes.
