Yesterday, at 7:38 a.m., CUC said Kiya 1 circuit was hit by a power outage caused by moisture entering the high voltage switchgear that supplies power to the Obyan water wells.
The distribution line had a phase-to-phase short–circuit in the underground switchgear cable, which activated the main breaker at the Kiya Substation and limited the outage to the Kiya 1 circuit, CUC power division manager Gary P. Camacho said yesterday.
On Wednesday, he said the distribution hardware failed due to corrosion as a result of years of exposure, causing a heavy electrical fault that automatically tripped the feeder.
Power Plant 1 was required to manually trip Feeders 4 and 7 and Kiya 2 to prevent further outages, Camacho said in a media release.
The line crew identified and isolated the problem and they were able to energize Kiya 4 by 10:40 p.m., he said.
The power interruption started at 8:38 p.m.
For Kiya 1, the power was restored 44 minutes later with the exception of the underground cable, which was repaired at 5 p.m. by the line crew, Camacho said.
He said CUC apologizes for any inconvenience the power interruptions imposed on the community.
