Fiji to defy Forum ultimatum

Pacific leaders last month held an emergency meeting in Papua New Guinea and called on Commodore Bainimarama to set a date by May 1.

Fiji risks suspension from the forum if it fails to meet the election deadline.

A suspension would result in Fiji losing all financial and technical aid provided by the forum.

However, Bainimarama said although Fiji will hold democratic elections, no date has been set.

“No one’s going to force us what to do here,” he said. “We’ve already decided what’s going to happen.  I must also tell you that unfortunately for the Forum, maybe only three countries endorsed what came out and decided that outcome, and that was Australia, New Zealand and Samoa.  And Samoa for good reason — Samoa and New Zealand are one and the same.”

Bainimarama also said the country’s former leader, Laisenia Qarase, may not be allowed to leave his country again after accusing him of lying to the courts.

Qarase is in Australia and Bainimarama said he understands that the ousted prime minister is visiting family.

However, Bainimarama said Qarase has been raising funds for his political party, the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, in violation of the court order that allowed him to leave the country.

Bainimarama has told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat program that there would be ramifications on Qarase’s return to Fiji.

“We certainly have to have a look at his visa when he comes back (and) whether he should go out again, because…he requested to come to Australia to see his family, and he and his lawyer made representation (to that effect) to the court,” he said.
