Head Start prepares for Valentine Walk

The event will start at 4 p.m. from the Garapan Fishing Base to National Office Supply and back to the starting point, according to Derwin Johnson, media coverage leader of Head Start’s fatherhood and male involvement committee.

Dubbed as “The Men’s Project — Stepping Up to The Plate,” the event is expected to draw the participation of parents, Head Start staff and community members.

The Valentine Walk will be led by the Head Start delegations from Tanapag, Garapan, Kagman, Dandan, Oleai, San Antonio and Chalan Kanoa.

Registration and distribution of t-shirts will start at 4 p.m. and end at 4:30.

Providing assistance to the participants are team leaders Mel Manibusan and Cisco Crus, and members Alan Delos Reyes, Nick Nekai, Ben Ada, Ivan Garces, Sid Seman and Ronnie Doca.

Judge Kenneth Govendo will deliver an inspirational message, while Head Start Policy Council Chairman Vinnie Sablan will give the opening remarks.

Participants will be provided with refreshment and entertainment after the fun walk.

On Jan. 29, the proclamation designating February as Fatherhood and Male Involvement Month, and Parent Leadership Month was signed by Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez, in his capacity as acting governor.

He urged parents to strengthen their roles as partners in providing services to the community.

Terrence Taiscan, fatherhood and male involvement committee chairman, said the contributions of all men who have taken on the fatherhood role deserved to be recognized not only on Father’s Day, which is on June 21 this year.

Taiscan said throughout the month of February, fathers and other males involved in the lives of Head Start children will be participating in  classroom activities as volunteers, observers or celebrity readers.

On Feb. 21, the organizers will conduct the “Family for the Environment” a beach cleanup activity at Micro Beach  from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

On Feb. 26,  fathers and other males will join to read with their children in every Head Start classroom from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Taiscan said all their activities are designed to establish a close bond within the family and the community, and recognize the importance of the father’s role in their children’s upbringing.
