House passes gubernatorial runoff bill

All 16 members present voted in favor of H.B. 16-220, which now goes to the Senate.

Vice Speaker Joseph Deleon Guerrero, the principal sponsor of H.B. 16-220, noted that 73 percent of the total votes cast in the 2007 general election voted in favor of the legislative initaive requiring a gubernatorial runoff .

Under  H.B. 16-220, a runoff election must be conducted 14 days after the election results had been determined.

Only the candidates who received the highest and second highest number of votes cast and counted will compete in the runoff.

Gov.  Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez got only  28.31 percent of the total votes cast in 2005.
