Jailed Samoan cabinet minister’s hopeful of prison release

“Only Yahweh [God] can make the true judgment for His people,” she said, “and only Yahweh can release Toi from prison.”

Mrs. Aukuso told the Samoa Observer she has never given up hope of her husband’s return since his incarceration in 2000.

She has paid no attention to the media, relying only upon God for strength, she said. “I never bother to do that, because it only makes it worse. I just turn to Yahweh all the time to help Toi,” Mrs. Aukuso said.

Faleata i Sisifo MP, Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi’s requested in Parliament on that Mr. Aukuso be granted parole.

Mrs. Aukuso is appreciative of his concern but deems it unnecessary. “I thank him for his concern and all the good things he has done for the constituency but as I said, only Yahweh makes the judgment,” she said.

One basis for Lealailepule’s request is that Mr. Aukuso is old and his health is declining. He is now 77 years of age.

But Mrs. Aukuso said her husband is becoming stronger and healthier. “He gets a check-up at the hospital sometimes but he is still in good health,” she said.

A former cabinet minister in the HRPP government, Mr. Aukuso and another minister, Leafa Vitale, are serving life sentences at Tafa’igata Prison. They were jailed for life in 2000 for plotting the murder of their colleague, Luagalau Levaula Kamu, who was killed in 1999.

Leafa’s son, Alatise, has been jailed for life for carrying out the murder.
