Green flag on Tinian

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality analyzes water samples collected from Tinian’s recreational beaches and storm water drainage this week as part of the regularly scheduled sampling.

None of the samples collected contained excessive concentration of fecal indicator bacteria nor did they exceed the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.

DEQ assigns all of the sampled beach sites a green flag.

Red flag raised at 2 sites

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag at two sites on Saipan and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

Samples collected from Garapan Fishing Dock and World Resort on Saipan contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria — enterococci — that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.

Tinian and Rota beaches are assigned a green flag.

DEQ analyzes samples of marine recreational and storm drainage water from 50 locations on Saipan, 10 on Tinian, 12 on Rota and a total of 11 samples from the shore surrounding Managaha.

Marine Water Quality Reports are also provided at www.deq.gov.mp/section.aspx?secID=4 and http://www.cnmicoralreef.net/wq/beachcloseweeklyresults.htm .

The agency welcomes all inquiries as to the quality of the beach water.

The public is encouraged to contact DEQ at 664-8500 with any questions concerning this matter.

DEQ presents at California conference

(DEQ) — Derek Chambers, environmental specialist not only represented the CNMI in a conference held in California, but also presented drinking water issues.

The CNMI is one of only five states or provinces that conduct the operator certification test via the web-based procedure.

Chambers’ presentation was on how the Division of Environmental Quality administers the test, and how the web-based test has improved services for local water operators.

DEQ’s safe drinking water program recently started web-based water operator certification testing as part of the water operator certification program.  The certification program is based on the Association of Boards of Certification standards and uses the ABC certification exam.  The information provided at the conference helps DEQ improve the certification program.

The annual conference was held in La Quinta, California from Jan 26 to Feb 2.
