Remengesau proposes Palau National Youth Congress

Senate Bill 8-34 stated that the youth congress will be able to assist the youth to prepare to meet the challenges of the future and can also make recommendations to the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) regarding pertinent legislation and to coordinate with international, regional, sub-regional, and national and state government agencies with youth programs to better streamline the implementation of the Palau National Youth policy.

The bill stated that the Youth Congress will be acting as a legislative body which will have the power to make its own rules, establish committees , hold hearings , pass resolutions and prepare and pass bills.The Youth Congress will be composed of members of three representatives from Koror State, two representatives from Airai State, one representative from each of other states.The congress will be further composed of one representative from each public and each private school except that any school with over 500 students shall have two representatives; there will also be three representatives from the Palau Community College (PCC).It added that no person shall be eligible to sit in the Congress who will not be at least 14 years of age at the beginning of his term who will reach the age of 22 during the term except if he or she is a full timw student under the age 25 at the end of the term.Representatives of the youth congress will serve without compensation but will get expenses for their attendance.
