Doktok’s attacker sentenced to 20 years

Sheldon Rengulbai appeared for a plea hearing and sentencing on Thursday afternoon.

Rengulbai who was charged with attempted first degree murder and burglary pleaded guilty to a lesser included offense of aggravated assault and burglary.Chief Justice Arthur Ngiraklsong accepted the plea and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment for each count to run consecutively for a total of 20 years.Chief Justice Ngiraklsong gave Rengulbai credit for time served from September 11, 2008.Rengulbai was ordered to pay restitution fee in an amount to be determined by the Probation office.Rengulbai was scheduled for a trial last week but he decided to enter a plea agreement.Rengulbai was charged for attacking police officer Lanson Doktok on July 10, 2008.Doktok was sleeping at his residence in Airai when Rengulbai entered his room and attacked him with a pick axe.Rengulbai left afterwards.Doktok’s wife who was preparing for work at that time found him on the floor with head injuries.Doktok was brought to the hospital and was in critical condition for several days.Rengulbai was arrested on September 11 at his residence in Airai.In the police affidavit submitted in court, Rengulbai admitted of attacking Doktok on July 10, 2008.The affidavit stated that Rengulbai admitted of attacking the cop because he was always chasing him.The affidavit stated that Rengulbai admitted that for seven years that he was in prison for another offense, he always thought of Doktok and he didn’t like the way the cop looked at him after he got out of prison.
