According to Christine Gstottner, Vice president of Shark Project, sharks contained Methyl Mercury, one of the biological most active and most dangerous poisons for men.
Gstottner showed report that predatory fish with a high content of Methyl Mercury are being sold on the markets under the name of “Shark, swordfish and cream horn” and these products can be considered extremely problematic for the human consumer.“The problem of this toxin, most of the consumers do not know that the product they are eating contained toxins and they do not know the danger of shark’s meat. So that’s what we are trying to do now. We are trying to inform the people that it’s poisonous to eat shark’s meat,”Gstottner said in an interview during her talk last week at the Barracuda Restaurant.Gstottner was the first speaker of the Sharks Week and she talked about the danger of eating shark meat and fins product.Gstottner said that a study revealed that consumption of shark meat as the main source for methyl mercury caused massive limitation in male fertility.It also causes neurological damages to unborn children if pregnant women are exposed to methyl mercury.Gstottner said they hold lectures, conference and symposiums all over Europe to inform the people.“And I think we are getting positive results. People are now starting to show concerns of the sharks and the tourism value of the sharks is getting higher,”she said.
