Koblerville school vows to meet goals despite lack of funds

The school’s new principal, Rizalina M. Purugganan, yesterday said financial constraints will not hinder the school from achieving its goals because “we are very creative — and we can do it with the support of the students, parents and the school staff members.”

The parents and the students are very cooperative in launching fundraising programs, Purugganan said.

Non-governmental organizations, the Legislature and the Public School System and the private sector are also providing assistance to KoES, she added.

“We also have dedicated staff members who work beyond their hour of duties,” acting vice principal Erica Thornburgh said.

When Purugganan’s appointment as full-time principal was confirmed by PSS in Nov. 2008, Thornburgh was  appointed as acting vice principal.

Purugganan and Thornburgh told Variety that under their leadership, the school is expecting more activities and improvement of buildings and other facilities on campus.

The programs for  students and teachers include  English language and literacy, the computer class, teacher incentives, teacher empowerment and leadership, the math competition, the Spelling Bee, the Geography Bee, peacebuilder character and education, parental conference, reading inventory and power reading assessment.

Thornburgh said they also initiated a standards-based report card in identifying the progress of student learning.

Purugganan, who holds a  master of education degree from Framingham State College, said she has yet to complete five courses.

She’s taking the clinical supervision and school personnel courses and will also complete  financial management, facilitative leadership and education law as required by PSS.
