Aging Office wants to take over unused restroom

Aging Office Director Howard Macaranas, a member of the Neighborhood Watch, said the facility can be used as a waiting shed.

He said graffiti can now be seen on government and private building and even on road signs.

If Garapan Head Start will not assume responsibility over the unused restroom, Macaranas said he will request the Division of Park and Recreation to “donate” the facility to the Aging Office.

The Aging Office has already developed the basketball court adjacent to its office. The unused restroom is situated also near the Aging Office.

“If we don’t transform that facility into a useful building it will only invite more vandalism,” he said.

Last month, Macaranas, who serves as president of the Garapan Elementary School Parents and Teachers Association, distributed survey forms to parents who were asked to list their concerns.

In the Chinatown area, Macaranas said graffiti, vandalism and junk vehicles are rampant.

Some private entities are willing to donate cleaning paraphernalia, including paint, to clean up the area, he added.

Macaranas said he also wants to encourage the youth to channel their artistic talents into more productive ways.

“We can’t say they are bad children. What’s the difference between what they do and the pieces of trash that also litter our roads?” he asked.

He said residents should come up with creative ways to solve the island’s graffiti problem.
