According to Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro, police officers responded to a disturbance call outside the Chicago Club in Garapan at 11:21 p.m. on Feb. 28.
Ogumoro said the responding police officers saw two men engaged in a fight on the sidewalk, surrounded by a crowd.
She said the officers dispersed the crowd and separated the two men.
Police learned that an argument had ensued earlier between the two men while they were in the club. The argument resulted in the fight.
Ogumoro said while the police were conducting investigation, one of the two men, Ryan R. Agulto, “started shouting profane words.”
Ogumoro said police officers told him to calm down and leave the area as he was causing a public disturbance.
Agulto then became more aggressive, and a police officer again had to instruct him to calm down and leave the area but Agulto instead approached the officer and verbally harassed the officer, Ogumoro said.
She said Agulto ignored the officer’s advice and continued to shout in the officer’s face.
When the officer tried to move Agulto away from him, Agulto punched the officer in the face, Ogumoro said.
Other police officers then arrested the defendant for assaulting a police officer.
Agulto continued to resist as officers tried to handcuff him, Ogumoro said.
She added that when the defendant was finally in the police vehicle, he kicked the rear passenger door.
Agulto was brought to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.
Officers detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from Agulto, Ogumoro said.
