The competitors will be permitted to fish anywhere around Saipan, Tinian and Goat Island with the exception of sanctuaries and marked diving spots.
Participants will target a variety of designated reef fish weighing a minimum of one pound. Winners in both individual and team categories will be determined by the total weight of fish caught.
Fish such as sharks, rays, and pelagic species are off-limits and will not be counted in a competitor’s total weight.
Asai said that the competition will start 6:00 a.m. and that all fishermen must be back at Smiling Cove for weigh-in no later than 4:00 p.m.
Individual and team winners will be awarded cash prizes, trophies and certificates. A trophy for the overall biggest fish caught will also be awarded.
MASC sponsored the inaugural Saipan Spearfishing Tournament in 2007. Last year’s competition attracted 42 participants from Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Guam. Asai said that he hopes for a larger turnout for this year’s tournament.
The registration fee is $50.00 per person and includes a bento lunch and tournament tee shirt. The deadline for registering is May 9.
Registration forms and tournament rules may be obtained from Asai at the Aquasmith Dive Shop in Garapan just east of the Bank of Guam. Asai can also be contacted at 483-7625 or [email protected].
