The URCC title match will be held on July 18 in Manila, according to Trench Tech, president, Cuki Alvarez who received an email invitation from URCC match maker, Willy Carlos.
The URCC, Alvarez said wants a “worthy” opponent for the “Killa from Manila” after Folayang defeated Mariana’s Elite fighter Jerome Norita in last month’s Battle Ready.
“I received an email from URCC match maker asking us if we had any tough guys from Saipan who would be willing to take on Folayang at 160lbs-169lbs. In fact, at first, they were very interested in getting Frank “The Crank” Camacho to fight Foloyang but Frank actually has an MMA fight in New Jersey and will fight at 155lbs this month on the 25th,” Alvarez said.
Giovanni’s name then came into the picture after his winning performance in the Pacific Extreme Combat 17-Fearless where he beat Guam’s hot shot- Robert “The Real Deal” Wusstig.
Carlos, according to Alvarez asked if Gio would be interested in taking the match up with Folayang.
“And obviously we were very excited. We had a little dilemma with the weight at first but asked the URCC to have Foloyang drop to 155lbs. Foloyang agreed and the fight was signed sealed and delivered,” Alvarez said adding that Giovanni will start his training next week.
For his part, Sablan said he is going to the Philippines “with victory on my mind. I think my experience and fighting style will be very tough for Folayang and I know my training will pay off.”
“I respect Folayang because of his accomplishments in MMA but I also know what I am capable of doing, and that he should not take me lightly. I will fight my heart out and I promise to do my very best,” he added.
Sablan and cornerman, Team Trench Tech’s Jason “The Rush” Tarkong will be flying to the Philippines on July 16.
