Tinian lawmaker says landfill relocation is urgent

The $5 million capital improvement project, which involves the closure and relocation of the landfill, will be the end use of the Brownfield project which received $30,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for site assessment.

Hofschneider, R-Tinian, said the proposed site is no longer the original one that was identified when the landfill project was first brought up.

Since it is located on land owned by the military, the Tinian legislative delegation, municipal government and the Department of Public Lands had to find another site.

Hofschneider said DPL  identified a 10-hectare land east of Tinian.

The old dump is located near the Tinian airport and has been polluting the nearby bay, Hofschneider said.

“For us on Tinian, it is a must to close the dump,” he said.
