Some say that the lack of continuity due to NMC’s current contract system is one of causes of the “climate fear” that exists among faculty, staff and administrators.
Board Chairman Charles V. Cepeda said NMC will look into this problem after the Western Association of Schools and Colleges come up with a decision on the college’s accreditation in June.
He said WASC requires the staff, faculty and the management team to submit recommendation regarding NMC policies.
Cepeda said he is confident that Fernandez will look into the proposed indefinite contracts for faculty, staff and administrators.
“If not, the board will put pressure on the president,” he said.
Fernandez, in an interview, said she is also for the “stability and security of our employees,” but, she added, the college must also exercise due diligence and make sure it goes through the process before major decisions are made.
Leo Pangelinan, NMC director for counseling program and services, said a consultant is now reviewing their human resources policy.
Pangelinan is also pushing for a revision of the current contract which he described as “antiquated.”
He said the Faculty Senate has raised this issue with the president but the timing may be “off” since the college is still addressing its accreditation..
