Arts Council expects good turnout for Women’s Art Exhibit

Arts coordinator Parker Yobei told the Variety yesterday that they already got several telephone confirmations from female artists who will be joining the month-long exhibit.

But with three days to go before its soft opening, DCAA has yet to receive an artwork from the island’s women artists.

“Our artists have little time to come up with artwork and more stuff since they sold a lot of their works at the Flame Tree Arts Festival last month, but we got commitments from them to participate,” Yobei said.

Yobei said  DCCA expects a good turnout in the exhibit this year.

“Last year’s sales reached almost $2,000, and we are hoping to surpass that,” he said.

All sales from the artwork will go back to the artists, as well as the items that will not be sold.

There are about 20-30 women artists on island who display their paintings, hand-made jewelry, handicrafts like woven baskets and beads and other artwork each year.

Yobei said the number could be more this year as new artists have shown interest to participate.

Yobei said  if the artists don’t have time to deliver their artwork to the arts gallery, they can just call the DCCA for pick-up services.

“We understand that most of our artists have regular day jobs but we can pick up their products for them,” Yobei said.

Yobei is encouraging all women artists regardless of age and culture to take advantage of the special opportunity to experience, participate and promote their artistic talents by joining the exhibit.

He said artists can submit their artwork to the Arts Council office or pick up registration forms free.
