The six golfers’ organizations that participated in the tournament are the Saipan Golfers’ Association, Refaluwasch Golf Association, Exclusive Golf Association, Amigos Golf Saipan, Fil-Taga and Wait-A-Minute.
Unknowingly racing to the narrow end, ace golfers of each group pared and birdied in most of 12 Peoria holes.
With only six holes to spare for bogeys, Mangarero started with two straight bogeys in holes 1 and 2, then, bogeyed again in 6 as finished 3-over par 39 in the front nine.
“But the turning point of my game was in hole 13 where I four putted,” Mangerero said as he recounted how he triple bogeyed in hole 13, where he found out later on in the banquet he reaped most handicap allowances. He grossed 82 from which he earned a net of 71.2 to win the tournament.
“My first shot went to the pine trees 10 feet away. My second made it to the green,” says Mangarero who shot 43 in the back nine where he bogeyed in three more hidden holes.
Freddie Cataluna of Fil-Taga finished three strokes over par 75 bogeying only in Peoria holes 9, 13 and 16 to win the second place with a net of 72.
Ed H. Manglona of Amigos Golf Saipan doubled bogeyed in holes 1, 5, 11, 15 and tripled bogeyed in 16, and tied with Cataluna at 72.6
Joe Rosario of Saipan Golfers’ Association settled for fifth place as his 25.2 handicapped trimmed his 98 gross to 72.8.
Richard Kautz of Fil-Taga shot the lowest gross of 72.
He finished 1-under par 35 in the back nine and was in -1.2 handicap as he had most off sets from Peoria-hole bogeys and placed sixth with 73.2 net.
Mangarero’s colleague in RGA, Jess I. Wabol also bogeyed in holes 1 and 2 but he offset the handicap allowance as he birdied in 4 and 6. He shot 1-over par 37 and 2-over part 38 in the back and front respectively. He settled for 12th place.
Edward Manibusan who shot even par 36 in the front and 2-over par 38 in the back got zero handicap to score a net of 74.
He bogeyed only in Peoria holes 2 and 15.
Jeff Taylor fired 1-under par 35 in the back nine as also played pretty well in the front shooting 2-over par 38 to finish with 73 and netted 74.2.
SGA’s Joe Demapan shot closest to the pin in hole 3; Frankie Sablan in 7; John Cepeda in 12 and Rick Kautz in 14.
Terry Attao shot the lowest gross in women’s division.
