Zoning board picks new administrator

The administrator receives a maximum of $50,000 annual salary.

A sustainable development director for a town project in Loreto, Mexico, Barret was among those on the shortlist that Tilley  submitted to the board before he left.

Barret was one of the six applicants who turned in complete documents.

According to Zoning Board Chairman Henry S. Hofschneider, the number of applicants were trimmed down from six to three based on the criteria that included education and training, experiences in planning and zoning, management, cross-cultural and overseas work, personality and enthusiasm for the job and communication skills.

Hofschneider said Barret did his homework in getting to know about Saipan.

The applicant was able to answer a set of questions the board asked and was able to share his own views regarding some of the island’s pressing issues.

Barret has 25 years experience in planning, architecture design and has done drafting work for various cities and towns.

He also has 30 years experience as founding partner of companies that deal with innovative technology and planning designs.

During the board’s interview, Barret showed what he knows about value of marine resources and the effect of rapid urbanization on a small community, Hofschneider said.

“He recognizes the need to strike a balance,” he added.
