Yap to host canoe festival

Some of those members who were assigned special tasks by the committee have reported completing their assignments, but others said they have put things on hold until they receive concrete information from agencies they are dealing with.

The reports indicated that the invitation card for outside guests and dignitaries has already been in place as well as a demonstrator identification.

The Traditional Navigation Society, for its part, has agreed to bring down one of its sailing canoes at Makiy to Colonia to be used for the practice of sailing.

TNS said the canoe will be kept in Colonia as long as there is a full-time sailing instructor on hand to give sailing lessons.

Other reports have indicated that all elementary schools in Yap will come together as soon as their graduations are over so they can discuss participation in the festival’s water activities.

The organizing committee felt that the only type of canoeing the students will be most involved in are the nonow, totang and bamboo raft races.

Elementary schools can also participate in the smaller canoe paddling and sailing races as long as they are well-trained before the October events.

Other members  reported that international canoes that will join the competition are in good condition and ready to be used for practice.

However, there are still not enough paddles which can only be ordered from off-island.
