Windy Orcine, a sophomore at Marianas High School, and Jennifer Uy, a junior at Tinian High School, were selected by a committee at Monterey Peninsula College.
“I am extremely grateful for this wonderful opportunity,” said Windy Orcine in an interview. “I look forward to learning about marine life and the effects we have on them.”
Northern Marianas College, which administers the Upward Bound program, was invited to send students to the summer program.
Interested Upward Bound students were asked to write e essays, which were then sent to a reviewing committee in Monterey.
The committee chose to invite Orcine and Uy.
At the summer program, which will run from June 26 to July 26, Orcine and Uy will have the opportunity to experience college life and take up courses in marine biology, mathematics, communications and personal development.
The two students will also participate in laboratory and field exercises, workshops, counseling and other activities.
“I am excited for the chance to experience college life,” said Uy. “Aside from meeting new people, I’ll be able to learn how to be independent and resourceful.”
A federally funded program, Upward Bound aims to provide certain categories of high school students better opportunities for attending college.
