New Korean group to join Liberation Day festivities

Its spokesman, Simeon Sin, said the Saipan Poong Mul Pae group performed at the Liberation Day carnival grounds on Saturday night.

The group’s 20 members performed traditional Korean music and dances, Sin said.

“We just organized in January and this is the first time that we will participate in the Liberation Day festivities,” he said.

They first performed during the Flame Tree Arts Festival in April.

The other Korean group led by Jun Ho Park has already prepared their presentation for the Fourth of July.

Today, Park said he and other members of the Korean community will meet with Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela to discuss the arrival of the Hong Sung Hee Modern Dance Company, the Music Association of Korea, the Korea Music Association of Jeonbuk Branch, the Korean Cultural Samuloli and the Cultural Dance Group from Korea.

These groups, consisting of more than 90 dancers, are set to arrive on July 2.

“Your most valuable support and participation will never be forgotten in our hearts for making it possible to leave your family, loved ones and friends to come to our beautiful island to entertain us as we reminisced that very day when our grandparents, parents and other family members were released from the interment camps of Camp Susupe and Chalan Kanoa to reunite among one another safety and peacefully,” Tudela told the Korean group.

Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Perry John P. Tenorio and MVA Chairman Jerry Tan also expressed gratitude to the Korean groups that will join the Liberation Day celebration.

“We are very pleased and honored by your continuous visits to the island of Saipan to share the rich and beautiful culture of South Korean. Your visits strengthen the ties and friendship between Korean and the CNMI,” the MVA officials said.
