He is among the local farmers who has been asking the organizers to postpone the fair because the crops are not yet ready to compete.
Citing the drought that hit Saipan in the last few months, Camacho said local farmers, particularly those relying only on the government’s irrigation system, have been having difficulties in growing vegetables and fruits that are fit for the competition.
The Agriculture Fair is scheduled for Saturday, but Camacho doubts if local farmers will be able come up with quality produce.
He said the fair’s main goal is to educate the community about quality local agriculture products.
“This is not just about winning prizes,” he added.
Fair chairman Isidoro T. Cabrera, in a separate interview, said the Agriculture Fair was originally set for May 23 — it has been rescheduled already to give the farmers enough time.
Camacho aired his concern during the Agriculture Month proclamation last Saturday, but Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said he agreed with the organizers — the Fair should proceed on Saturday.
