Fisheries council to host summer classes

Agriculture Director Richard Seman, who is coordinating the program, said this is the second time CNMI high school students will learn more about fishery and marine resources.

Last year’s summer class was attended by 10 students and was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s coral reef conservation program.

This time, Wespac aims to sign up at least  15 students.

The summer course, Seman said, aims to make the study of fishery and marine resources interesting for students.

Once they choose marine biology or fisheries as their career, these students can help develop a sustainable means of managing marine resources in the future, Seman said.

This year, there will be 15 subjects prepared for the students. These include fish identification, fish processing, fish management both local and federal level, enforcement and fish facility.

The lessons will be held at the Division of Fish and Wildlife’s fisheries compound.

Local marine biologists will be providing the lectures that will be conducted from June 17 to June 30.
