Fiji’s ex-PM Qarase re-appears in court

The court appearance is ahead of Qarase’s pending trial on abuse of office charges.

During proceedings, Qarase’s counsel, former Attorney General Qoroniasi Bale, told the court that the commission had written to his client at his island home in Mavana, Lau stating that the former PM had violated his bail conditions by being there.

Justice Daniel Goundar dismissed the claim while accepting that Qarase had surrendered his passport and would not be leaving the country.

Qarase is expected back in court on July 1 to discuss issues regarding the start of his High Court trial.

Qarase’s charges relate to actions he  took while holding the positions of prime minister, minister for Fijian affairs and chairman of the Native Land Trust Board.

It is charged that he gazetted the Native Land (Trust Funds Investment) Regulations 2004, allowing the board unfettered power to invest any trust funds held in its trust, thereby causing prejudice to the rights of the Fijian Affairs Board.

The anti-corruption commission said this money was to be used by the Fijian Affairs Board.

Qarase also authorized the sale and transfer of Class A shares to three separate companies which he had interests in — Q-Ten Investments Limited, Cicia Plantation Co-op Society Limited, and Mavana Investments Limited, the commission stated.
